1️⃣ Subordinating Conjunctions
👉 Verb goes to the end of the clause
🔹 zumal (especially since)
Used to strengthen an argument.
Er blieb zu Hause, zumal er sich nicht wohl fühlte.
He stayed at home, especially since he wasn’t feeling well.
Sie kündigte, zumal die Arbeitsbedingungen unerträglich geworden waren.
She resigned, especially since the working conditions had become unbearable.
🔹 sofern (provided that)
Formal conditional.
Sofern Sie einverstanden sind, beginnen wir morgen.
Provided that you agree, we will start tomorrow.
Sofern keine Einwände bestehen, wird der Vertrag verlängert.
Provided that there are no objections, the contract will be extended.
🔹 wohingegen (whereas / in contrast)
Strong contrast between two clauses.
Er ist sehr risikofreudig, wohingegen seine Schwester eher vorsichtig handelt.
He is very willing to take risks, whereas his sister acts more cautiously.
Die Stadt investiert in Bildung, wohingegen die Nachbargemeinde spart.
The city invests in education, whereas the neighboring municipality is saving money.
🔹 obgleich / wenngleich (although – formal)
Obgleich er wenig Erfahrung hatte, überzeugte er im Gespräch.
Although he had little experience, he impressed in the interview.
Wenngleich die Situation schwierig war, gab sie nicht auf.
Although the situation was difficult, she did not give up.
🔹 sodass (result)
Expresses consequence.
Er arbeitete hart, sodass er befördert wurde.
He worked hard, so that he was promoted.
Es regnete stark, sodass das Spiel abgesagt werden musste.
It rained heavily, so the match had to be canceled.
2️⃣ Connectors with Genitive

🔹 angesichts + Genitiv (in view of)
Angesichts der steigenden Preise müssen wir sparen.
In view of rising prices, we must save money.
Angesichts der aktuellen Lage ist Vorsicht geboten.
In view of the current situation, caution is advised.
🔹 aufgrund + Genitiv (because of)
Aufgrund technischer Probleme fiel der Flug aus.
Due to technical problems, the flight was canceled.
Aufgrund seines Engagements erhielt er eine Auszeichnung.
Because of his commitment, he received an award.
🔹 infolge + Genitiv (as a result of)
Infolge der Krise gingen viele Arbeitsplätze verloren.
As a result of the crisis, many jobs were lost.
Infolge starker Regenfälle kam es zu Überschwemmungen.
As a result of heavy rainfall, flooding occurred.
🔹 mangels + Genitiv (for lack of)
Mangels Beweisen wurde das Verfahren eingestellt.
Due to lack of evidence, the proceedings were discontinued.
Mangels Alternativen akzeptierte er das Angebot.
For lack of alternatives, he accepted the offer.
🔹 seitens + Genitiv (on the part of)
Seitens der Regierung wurde Kritik geäußert.

3️⃣ Fixed Prepositional Connectors
Very formal and common in essays.
🔹 im Hinblick auf + Akkusativ (with regard to)
Im Hinblick auf die Zukunft müssen wir nachhaltiger handeln.
With regard to the future, we must act more sustainably.
🔹 im Gegensatz zu + Dativ (in contrast to)
Im Gegensatz zu seinem Bruder ist er sehr ehrgeizig.
In contrast to his brother, he is very ambitious.
🔹 im Vergleich zu + Dativ (compared to)
Im Vergleich zu früher ist das Leben teurer geworden.
Compared to earlier times, life has become more expensive.
🔹 unter der Voraussetzung, dass (provided that)
👉 Verb at the end.
Unter der Voraussetzung, dass alle zustimmen, wird das Projekt umgesetzt.
Provided that everyone agrees, the project will be implemented.
4️⃣ Logical Double Connectors
Very popular in C1 writing.
🔹 nicht nur … sondern auch (not only … but also)
Er ist nicht nur kompetent, sondern auch äußerst zuverlässig.
He is not only competent but also extremely reliable.
🔹 weder … noch (neither … nor)
Er hat weder angerufen noch eine Nachricht geschrieben.
He neither called nor wrote a message.
🔹 je … desto (the … the)
Je mehr man übt, desto sicherer wird man.
The more one practices, the more confident one becomes.
🔹 geschweige denn (let alone)
Er hat keine Zeit, geschweige denn Lust.
He has no time, let alone motivation.
🔹 es sei denn (unless)
Ich komme mit, es sei denn, ich werde krank.
I will come along, unless I get sick.
5️⃣ Sentence Adverbs (Verb Position Trap!)
🔥 Important: The verb remains in position 2.
🔹 folglich (consequently)
Er hatte keine Erfahrung. Folglich wurde er nicht eingestellt.
He had no experience. Consequently, he was not hired.
🔹 demnach (accordingly)
Die Nachfrage ist gestiegen. Demnach erhöhen sich die Preise.
Demand has increased. Accordingly, prices are rising.
🔹 hingegen (however / in contrast)
Er ist optimistisch, sie hingegen bleibt skeptisch.
He is optimistic; she, however, remains skeptical.
🔹 nichtsdestotrotz (nevertheless)
Das Projekt war riskant. Nichtsdestotrotz wurde es umgesetzt.
The project was risky. Nevertheless, it was implemented.
