1. That-Clause (dass)
Make formal statements. Verb goes at the END.
Structure
Ich denke, dass + subject + … + VERB (at end)
Ich denke, dass die Digitalisierung eine Chance darstellt.
I think that digitalization is an opportunity.
Es ist bekannt, dass der Klimawandel wirtschaftliche Folgen hat.
It is known that climate change has economic effects.
Studien zeigen, dass Menschen, die Sport treiben, stabiler sind.
Studies show that people who exercise are more stable.
Ich bin sicher, dass diese Entscheidung mein Leben verändert hat.
I am sure that this decision changed my life.
Erfahrung lehrt, dass es wichtig ist, zuzuhören.
Experience teaches that it is important to listen.
2. Would-Form (würde)
Say what you would do. Say what might happen. Not what IS.
Structure
Ich würde + VERB + wenn… (if)
Wenn ich die Chance hätte, würde ich nochmal anfangen.
If I had the chance, I would start again.
Ich denke, eine bessere Balance würde zu mehr Produktivität führen.
I think better balance would lead to more productivity.
Es würde helfen, wenn du das erklären könntest.
It would help if you could explain that.
Hätte ich das früher gewusst, würde ich diese Fehler nicht machen.
If I had known that earlier, I would not make these mistakes.
Meiner Meinung nach würde mehr Geld in Bildung sinnvoll sein.
In my opinion, more money in education would make sense.
3. Passive Voice
Remove “I.” Say what happens. Sound objective.
Structure
werden + past participle (what is done)
In unserer Abteilung werden Entscheidungen demokratisch getroffen.
In our department, decisions are made democratically.
Die deutsche Sprache wird oft als schwierig wahrgenommen.
German is often seen as difficult.
Während der Pandemie wurde vieles online gemacht.
During the pandemic, many things were done online.
Es wird zu viel spekuliert über Künstliche Intelligenz.
Too much is being guessed about artificial intelligence.
Diese Fehler hätten vermieden werden können.
These mistakes could have been avoided.
4. Relative Clause with Preposition
Say which thing you mean. Preposition + which + details.
Structure
The thing, + preposition + dem/der/das + … + verb (at end)
Das Problem, für das wir eine Lösung brauchen, ist organisatorisch.
The problem for which we need a solution is organizational.
Der Prozess, mit dem wir arbeiten, ist zehn Jahre alt.
The process with which we work is ten years old.
Die Personen, auf die man hört, wissen oft nicht viel.
The people to whom one listens often know little.
Das Thema, über das alle sprechen, ist wichtig.
The topic about which everyone speaks is important.
Die Methode, nach der wir arbeiten, ist wissenschaftlich.
The method according to which we work is scientific.
5. Indirect Speech
Say what someone else said. Not your opinion.
Structure
Er sagt, … + sei / habe / solle (special form)
Der Politiker sagt, die Wirtschaft sei gesund.
The politician says the economy is healthy (his words, not mine).
Der Bericht behauptet, dass Homeoffice die Produktivität steigere.
The report claims that working from home increases productivity.
Viele Experten meinen, dass erneuerbare Energien die Zukunft seien.
Many experts think that renewable energy is the future.
Der Artikel behauptet, KI zerstöre Millionen von Jobs.
The article claims that AI destroys millions of jobs.
Mein Professor sagte, ich solle praktisch arbeiten, nicht nur Theorie.
My professor said I should work practically, not only theory.
How to Practice (Do This Today)
- Read one pattern example aloud 3 times. Listen to yourself.
- Tomorrow: read a different pattern. Same thing.
- When you are nervous in the exam: use Pattern 1 (“Ich denke, dass…”). It always works.
- These are not about being perfect. They are about NOT getting stuck.
